FINRA Rule 2111

FINRA Rule 2111 requires brokers to tailor their investment recommendations to suit investors’ profiles. These profiles describe an investor’s age, tax status, investment goals, and risk tolerance.

Brokers must also take care to recommend suitable investment strategies. Overconcentration can be an unsuitable strategy for some investors due to the level of risk involved.

Investors who rely on brokers for recommendations may be able to recover their losses by seeking out FINRA arbitration.

FINRA Rule 2020

FINRA Rule 2020 prohibits the use of manipulative, deceptive, or otherwise fraudulent methods to influence investors’ decisions. Misrepresenting information related to investments, such as their risks, requirements, or other features violates this rule.

What are structured notes?

Structured notes, also called structured products, combine a bond with a derivative–such swaps, futures, or options–and pay investors based on the performance of those derivatives.

The complexity and risks associated with structured notes can make them unsuitable for many investors.
