Brandon Kohnen is the Subject of a VUL Dispute

Brandon Kohnen (CRD #: 5857321), a broker registered with NYLife Securities, is the subject of an investor dispute. This disclosure appears in his BrokerCheck record, accessed on September 15, 2023. Keep reading if you have questions regarding his alleged conduct.

On August 3, 2023, an investor alleged that Brandon Kohnen misinformed her when she was recommended insurance policies in May of 2022. These insurance policies included a Variable Universal Life insurance policy (VUL).

What is a VUL?

A Variable Universal Life insurance policy (VUL) has two notable features: a tax-free death benefit for beneficiaries and an investment portfolio. Part of each premium payment is invested—but returns depend on the performance of these investments, so the policy is not guaranteed to increase in value. Additionally, VULs are often at risk for lapsing, which negates their tax benefits.

FINRA Rule 2010

FINRA Rule 2010 holds brokers to high standards of commercial honor and just and equitable principles of trade. Misinforming a client violates this rule.
